This activity is a visual exercise that distils various pieces of information about the young person's experience into a single reference point, helpful in understanding the young person, their desires, and what they require from you as their youth worker.
Overview of Activity
The aim of the activity is to help young workers to better understand their young people, and build strong relationships to help the young people on their progression journeys.
Description of Activity
Step-by-step instructions:
1. Using the attached worksheet, youth workers can complete an empathy map to better understand their young people.
2. This activity is a qualitative method can which be completed by youth workers using a range of qualitative inputs - interviews, field studies, diary studies, listening sessions, qualitative surveys, and by observation of each individual mentee.
3. Alternatively, you may work closely with each young person on an individual basis to complete the empathy map together.
4. Comprised of 7 sections - What the mentee thinks and feels, what they hear, what they see, what they say and do, pains, gains and goals, each section must be completed to provide you with a deeper understanding of each young person, including their motivating factors, needs and aspirations.
