Overview of Activity
This activity is designed to see how participants would behave once they exchange their roles with participants who also have other role characters, and shows how people would act once they put themselves in someone else’s shoes who have a different occupation.
Description of Activity
1. Preparing Role Characters: (5 minutes)
a. Create a list of different occupation characters based on the desired learning objectives (e.g., doctor, teacher, chef, police officer, artist, engineer, etc.).
b. Assign each participant a specific occupation character secretly without revealing it to others by giving them their respective role cards.

2. Role Exchange: (10 minutes)
a. Explain to the participants that they will be exchanging their roles with others during the activity.
b. Instruct participants to find a partner with whom they will exchange roles.
c. Allow time for participants to discuss their original and exchanged roles with their partners, sharing insights, challenges, and experiences related to their respective occupations.

3. Reflection and role-playing: (45 minutes)
a. Invite participants to participate in a role-playing exercise in which they assume the characteristics and duties of the occupation they have switched to. (25 minutes)
b. Encourage participants to consider their new position when handling instances, making decisions, and interacting with others.
c. Facilitate a reflection session where participants can share their experiences, observations, and newfound understanding after acting out a role. (10 minutes)
d. Encourage conversation on the difficulties, points of view, and insights discovered throughout the role swap, emphasizing the value of empathy and comprehension in various occupational contexts. (10 Minutes)
Sources & Additional Materials
Pen, small sheets of paper to be used as role cards
Additional Notes
● Encourage participants to approach the role exchange with an open mind, respect, and sensitivity towards the challenges and experiences of the assigned roles. Remind them to avoid stereotypes or making assumptions about the occupation they are embodying.
● Encourage all participants to actively engage in the role-play activity and discussions. This includes taking on the characteristics, responsibilities, and decision-making processes associated with the assigned occupation.
● As the facilitator, be prepared to provide guidance and support throughout the activity. Help participants navigate the role exchange, address any questions or concerns, and facilitate meaningful discussions during the reflection sessions.
● Consider the size and dynamics of the group when designing and implementing the activity. Adjust the duration, discussion format, and facilitation techniques to suit the specific needs and characteristics of the participants.
